Unfreeze Afghanistan’s assets, lawmakers ask Biden

KABUL (Pajhwok): Three US lawmakers have called for President Joe Biden to release Afghanistan’s frozen assets to help ward off a looming humanitarian crisis.

In a letter to Biden, the members of the House of Representatives proposed a focused release of humanitarian funds to help the Afghan people.

According to The Hindu, they reminded the president of America’s moral obligation to the Afghans, who partnered with them in the war against terrorism.

The legislators wrote: “When the last American troops left Afghanistan, the United States promised that we would not abandon Afghanistan.”

“We must uphold our promise and do what is necessary to ensure that the progress made over the last 20 years is not lost,” the lawmakers continued.

They believed the US could not allow Afghanistan to once again become a breeding ground for terrorist organisations intent on killing Americans.

In the wake of the Taliban takeover in mid-August, the US and its allies froze nearly $10 billion in the Afghan central bank’s reserves.
