GARDEZ (Pajhwok): About a year after a Pajhwok Afghan News report, revenue collection has been started from shops and markets in the capital of southeastern Paktia province.
On November 10, 2020, Pajhwok published a report that revenue from 6,500 shops and markets in two districts and city of Gardez end up in private pockets instead of going to the government treasures.
But almost a year after the report, during the new government, the collection of taxes from shops and markets in Gardez has begun.
Gardez Mayor Maulvi Sharifullah Elham told Pajhwok Afghan News: “We have identified hundreds of markets, shops, handcarts and other revenue sources in the city, which had not paid revenue for the past few years.”
He said if the revenue was collected, it would be up to 100 million afghanis, which would help the municipality do more.
Elham said he had identified new places for traders and businessmen in Gardez, which would bring order to the city and generate revenue for the municipality.
According to him, the revenue collected by the municipality has been worked out in a systematic way to carry out necessary activities in the city.
The citizens of Gardez welcomed the move and demanded that revenue collection should be taken seriously in the city.
Dost Mohammad, a resident of Gardez, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “There were many revenue collection centers in Gardez, which if collected properly, it could be used in carrying out development activities.”
