OIC summit wants Afghan humanitarian crisis averted

KABUL (Pajhwok): Participants of an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Islamabad on Sunday called for humanitarian assistance to prevent further unrest in Afghanistan and said the international community should support the country.

In addition to 70 member states and organizations, representatives from the United States, Russia, China, Germany and the European Union also attended today’s OIC meeting on Afghanistan hosted by Pakistan.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan told the gathering that Afghanistan urgently needed humanitarian aid and that unless conditions were met, it would be difficult for aid to reach the country.

He did not specify the conditions for aid to Afghanistan, but said that unless urgent steps were taken to end the current humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, there would be chaos in the country.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also said that Afghanistan was facing the threat of economic collapse and that the situation had affected Pakistan as well.

He said that the chaos and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan could lead to the rise of extremism and terrorism in the region and could lead to instability.

He added that it was time for the international community to stand by the people of Afghanistan to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.

Qureshi added that OIC member countries stood by the people of Afghanistan from the very beginning, so there was a need for unconditional humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud told the gathering that the economic crisis in Afghanistan posed a threat not only to Afghans but also to the region and the world.

OIC Secretary General Hussein Ibrahim called on the OIC representatives to help the people of Afghanistan.

Hussein Ibrahim said: “Afghans should accept each other; we will provide humanitarian assistance to them, all sides should work for unity and reconciliation to rebuild their country together.” He called for unity and reconciliation in Afghanistan from all sides.

Turkish Foreign Minister stressed the need for immediate humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and said that a delegation of Islamic countries should visit Kabul to show cooperation and coordination with the Afghan people in these difficult times. He also said that the economic crisis in Afghanistan must be averted.

He added that the United States had frozen Afghanistan’s assets, adding that sanctions on Afghanistan’s financial resources were causing more problems for the country.

Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi told the gathering that the freezing of Afghanistsan assets by the United States had forced the country to rely on emergency aid and cash, and that Afghanistan, as a sovereign state, had the right to formally interact with the world.

“As a representative and responsible government of the Afghan people, we consider it our responsibility to ensure human rights, women’s rights and participation of all walks of life in the government. ”

He added now there were good opportunities for foreign investors in Afghanistan and the government would assure them necessary facilities and security.

Mottaqi said the 43-year-old war ended with the establishment of “Islamic Emirate” in Afghanistan, with the war casualties reducing to zero. He said prisons were emptied of political prisoners, government institutions were restored in a short time. He said five hundred thousand employees go to work as before and no one is discriminated against or retaliated against.
