Biden to Congress: Help Afghans become US citizens

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Joe Biden has urged Congress to help tens of thousands of Afghan refugees become legal permanent residents of the United States.

The American leader issued the call in a proposal included in the supplemental budget request sent to lawmakers last week.

CNN reported Biden included the Afghan Adjustment Act in the budget request mainly focused on emergency assistance to Ukraine.

Democratic lawmakers Chris Coons of Delaware and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota have led the adjustment legislation in recent months.

In case of approval, the measure would permit Afghans arriving in the US between July 31, 2021, and September 20, 2022, to apply to change their immigration status to permanent residency.

Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August last year, over 60,000 Afghans were evacuated to the US.
