KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan Acting Government has renewed its commitment to 1972 Water Treaty between Afghanistan and Iran, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Water on Friday.

The statement added acting Afghan government was fully committed to the technical aspects, legal bases and protocol of 1972 Water Treaty of Helmand River between Iran and Afghanistan.

The ministry has renewed its commitment and willingness for the full implementation of the agreement.

The 16-point agreement was negotiated and reached between the then Afghanistan Prime Minister Musa Shafiq and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Howida in 1972.

The ministry calls for the implementation of this agreement when recently Afghanistan and Iran escalated tension over water after the construction of Kamal Khan Dam in southwestern Nimroz province.
