Afghan women on list for top EU award

KABUL (Pajhwok): A group of Afghan women and jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny are on the list for European Union’s Sakharov Prize.

Jeanine Anez, the jailed Bolivian politician and former interim president, has also been nominated for the top human rights award, the Associated Press reported. .

Women’s predicament has been one of the main issues since the Taliban’s takeover in mid-August.

Human rights activists, a journalist and cultural figures have been named for the Sakharov Prize.

The winner, to be announced on Wednesday, will be given the 50,000-euro prize during the session of the European Parliament in France on Dec. 15.

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought was launched in 1988 to honour people and organisations defending human rights and fundamental liberties.
