KABUL (Pajhwok): Following a Taliban ban on its programmes, the Voice of America (VOA) has launched a 24/7 direct-to-home satellite-delivered television channel for Afghanistan.
The new channel would carry uncensored news and information in Pashto and Dari languages, announced the US government-funded media outlet.
Earlier in the week, the Taliban directed VOA-affiliated Afghan TV channels to stop showing its programmes. Similar curbs have also been imposed on the BBC and Deutsche Welle
The news agency identified its new TV stream as VOA Afghanistan, which is on the Yahsat Y-1A satellite (52.2 degrees East), Transponder 12 (downlink frequency 11.938 GHz), Channel 469.
A leading Pakistani newspaper, Dawn, quoted Acting VOA Director Yolanda López as saying: “Afghanistan is now one of the most repressive media markets in the world.”
