Kabul to set up paraplegic centre, seeks Pakistan’s help

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Afghan Red Crescent Society has urged the management of the Peshawar-based Paraplegic Centre to help it in setting up a similar institution in Kabul.

Thousands of Afghans have been successfully treated at the centre during the Afghan war. It is the only medical institution in Pakistan that treats spinal cord injuries and manufactures artificial limbs.

Maulvi Matiul Haq Khalis, head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, visited the medical facility at the head of a delegation.

The head of the centre, Dr Syed Mohammad Ilyas, briefed the delegates about the aims and objectives of the organisation and the services offered by it.

He believed there was an urgent need to create an institution like the Paraplegic Centre for physical, psychological and social rehabilitation of the disabled in Afghanistan.

Maulvi Matiul Haq Khalis and the delegation he led also inspected the institution and inquired after the Afghan and Pakistani patients there.

He invited Dr Ilyas Syed to visit Afghanistan with his team of experts. He said the Paraplegic Centre had been serving Afghans since 1984.

Dr Syed accepted the invitation of the Afghan delegation and assured it of his full cooperation.
