Germany to take limited number of Afghan refugees

KABUL (Pajhwok): The German government is planning to accept a maximum of 5,000 Afghan refugees a year, says a media report.

The planned resettlement of Afghans to Germany was aimed to ensure the operational feasibility of the programme, reported the news magazine Der Spiegel.

In Berlin, the Ministry of Interior said more than 18,800 Afghans had entered Germany since the Taliban’s takeover in mid-August 2021.

On the other hand, Info Migrants says more than 10,000 Afghans, who have been granted admission by Germany, continued to stay in the country.

“With 148 175 first-time asylum applicants registered in 2021, Germany accounted for over one-quarter of all first-time applicants in the EU,” Eurostat said.

Germany was followed by France with 103,790 first-time asylum applicants or 19 percent, Spain with 62,050 or 12 percent, Italy with 43,900 or eight per cent, and Austria with 36,725 or seven percent.
