Afghan embassy in Washington to be shut: NYT

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s cash-strapped embassy in Washington is going to be closed, the New York Times reported on Saturday, citing State Department officials.

Afghan diplomats had a month to apply for residency or temporary humanitarian parole to stay in the United States, the newspaper said.

After a month, the diplomats may be deported from the US. But it remains unclear where the diplomats would go, as they will not be sent to Afghanistan.

Some 25 diplomats had not yet applied to remain in the US, the NYT said, suggesting several dozens had not been paid since October.

The State Department would not accredit any diplomats the Taliban send to Washington, according to the newspaper.
