KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan has topped the Global Terrorism Index published annually by the Institute of Economics and Peace.
According to the institute, Afghanistan was the most affected by terror as well as the least peaceful country in the world. It has been at the opposite ends of both indices for several years now, with its rating only declining since their inception in the 2000s.
In 2021, Afghanistan witnessed 1,426 deaths from terrorism, around 20 percent of the world’s total. The number was up once more compared to 2020 following the violent takeover of Taliban after US withdrawal from the country.
In 2021, Afghanistan witnessed 837 incidents resulting in death of 1,426 and injury of 2,199 and 91 kidnappings have been recorded.
According to the report, there have been 5,226 terrorist attacks worldwide in the last one year of which 20 percent happened in Afghanistan.
The deadliest attack of the year was during an “evacuation” at Kabul airport, in which 180 people were killed and at least 200 others were injured, the source said Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that there was no war in Afghanistan at the moment and the institutions that use the term “terrorism” were not in Afghanistan at all.
“The war of the US occupation in Afghanistan is over, the people of Afghanistan are defending their country and they have the right to defend their soil, now that the so-called Daesh is at war with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, they have been stopped. There is no major problem in Afghanistan at the moment and all threats have been eliminated.”
The war in Afghanistan ended after the previous government was collapsed in August this year and replaced by the current caretaker government.
