KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s embassy in New Delhi has welcomed the first consignment of wheat aid to the country faced with severe food insecurity.
In a rare Islamabad-Delhi collaboration on Afghanistan, India began dispatching 50,000 tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan via the Pakistan land route on Tuesday.
In line with the agreement between the government of India and the World Food Program (WFP), the wheat will be distributed by the UN agency in Afghanistan.
In Amritsar, Afghan Ambassador Farid Mamundzay also hailed India’s generous humanitarian aid to the Afghan people.
“India has always come forward to help Afghanistan. Friendly relations between India and Afghanistan have a long history,” he said.
Speaking to Asia News International (ANI), the ambassador said 20 million people in his country needed food. “India being a big brother is helping us with food aid…”
