Qatar vows to support Afghanistan’s development

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan delegates led by Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi have met diplomats from 16 European countries in Doha.

“Participants pledged to make all possible efforts for the overall well-being of the Afghan people,” the Taliban said in a statement.

Al Jazeera quoted the Taliban press release as saying the international community was willing to take effective steps in the field of humanitarian assistance.

However, the statement did not give any specific details about the measures the global fraternity would take to mitigate the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

EU special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas Niklasson, who also attended the talks, said the bloc would deliver 500 million euros in assistance through the UN and humanitarian organisation.

Niklasson tweeted that the Taliban pledged to open primary and secondary schools for boys and girls throughout the country no later than March.

Separately, representatives from of the Afghan and Qatar governments discussed ways of boosting cooperation in different fields.

The meeting was co-chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs Amir Khan Muttaqi and Qatar’s Assistant Foreign Minister Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater.

Representatives from several Qatari agencies participated in the meeting, led by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Education Above All Foundation, and the Qatar Fund For Development.

Officials of the Qatar Charity and the Qatar Red Crescent Society were also in attendance, according to the state-run news agency.

Afghanistan’s Higher Education Abdul Baqi Haqqani and representatives of the Ministry of Economy and the central bank also participated in the meeting.

Ways of developing cooperation in the field of education, especially in improving the qualifications of teachers and providing opportunities for Afghan students of both genders came up for discussions.

The Qatari institutions expressed their willingness to provide technical and material support for Afghanistan’s education sector.

Qatar’s support to Afghanistan in the areas of development and economic empowerment of people was also discussed.
