Alleviate plight of Afghans, MPs ask Pakistan govt

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistani lawmakers have underlined the need for sincere efforts at averting a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan.

Senators from both sides of the aisle warned the humanitarian crisis brewing in Afghanistan could have serious ramifications that could also affect Pakistan.

The legislators unanimously stressed urgent steps to ease the suffering of the people of Afghanistan, facing acute hunger and financial hardships.

Former Senate chairman Mian Raza Rabbani said Pakistan’s national security would be affected by the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

Referring to a recent conference of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Afghanistan, he slammed the Islamic bloc for paying mere lip-service to Muslim countries in crisis.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmed of the Jamaat-i-Islami held the US and its allies responsible for the humanitarian crisis in the neighbouring country.

A large number of Afghans, including children, were facing hunger, he said, asking the government to provide health facilities to the people of Afghanistan
