Women to continue playing cricket, says ACB chief

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan women would continue to play cricket as usual, an official said on Wednesday, suggesting the female national team would not be banned.

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Mirwais Ashraf held out the assurance at a meeting with departmental managers.

A statement from ACB quoted Ashraf as saying that women’s cricket was one of the major requirements of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

ACB remained committed to meeting its obligations, he said, adding: “Our girls will be playing cricket and we are looking to provide them with their basic needs.”

ICC requirements were valued by ACB and they were doing their best to meet them, said Ashraf.

ACB CEO Naseeb Khan congratulated Mirwais Ashraf on his new assignment and hailed his appointment as a good move for the board.

“We have had a productive meeting with the BCCI head Sourav Ganguly, and officials from other cricket-playing nations on having bilateral ties,” he said.
